Why Upgrade?
Starting in 2018, Jeep introduced the Advantec series rear axles (M220 “Dana 44” and M200 “Dana 35”). They switched the outer pinion bearing from the traditional tapered roller design to a double-row ball bearing. This was done to achieve a small gain in fleet fuel economy across millions of vehicles.
Unfortunately, in real-world use, especially with off-road driving and oversized tires, these ball bearings fail at a much higher rate. We've seen multiple cases where the same Jeep had repeat failures, sometimes more than once a year, even on stock-size tires.
